SOUTH FLORIDA METHAMPHETAMINE TASK GROUP

The South Florida Methamphetamine Task Group, a subcommittee/task group of the BCCSA was formed in May of 2003 to address the growing problem of Methamphetamine in South Florida. The subcommittee/task group membership consists of over 60 concerned professionals and lay people from Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. They represent law enforcement, health, mental health, substance abuse, education, and the faith community. The subcommittee has held regular meetings with an average attendance of some 12 to 15 at each meeting.

The committee/task group has discussed the determining factors contributing to the problem and has developed a strategic plan to address the issues. One of the primary goals of the task group is to raise community awareness of the growing methamphetamine problem, educate the community about this dangerous drug, and to have an impact in decreasing the proliferation of this drug. The task group since its inception has been involved in a number of initiatives - Community Alert Meetings in Ft. Lauderdale , Miami and Palm Beach, Social Marketing, Internet Outreach, Research, Training/Workshops, Consultation/Collaboration with other areas of the US dealing with this issue, and the Meth Watch Campaign.

Task Force to Combat Underage Drinking

Alcohol is still the most commonly used drug among Broward County students (2004 Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey) and binge drinking is more common than either tobacco or marijuana use. High school students disapprove of cigarettes and marijuana more than they do alcohol. This leads to the conclusion that the community needs to work on more environmental strategies that will address "norm shifting" if we intend to reduce alcohol consumption by young people. Under the leadership of the UWBCCSA, a local community collaboration has begun to focus their efforts on reducing youth drug use (specifically alcohol) and enforce underage drinking laws with a special emphasis on underage drunk/drugged driving.

The Task Force also oversees a "SIDNE" (Simulated Impaired Driving
Experience) ( www.fatalvision.com ) program.  This "high-tech go-cart"
demonstrates the hazards of drunk driving without the harmful repercussions.  For more information about using the SIDNE in community demonstration, please contact the Commission at (954) 760-7007.  Finally, in follow-up to the state produced CAN (Changing Alcohol Norms) report, ( http://www.myflorida.com/myflorida/government/governorinitiatives/drugc
ontrol/pdfs/2004-04-00-changing_norms.pdf
) the Task Force is working
with the Office of Drug Control Policy, helping to guide the state (from a
community perspective) of what is working in the field and set strategic
plans for the future.

Neighborhood Anti-Drug Coalitions

In 2003, the United Way of Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse helped to establish neighborhood anti-drug coalitions in the North, Central and South sectors of Broward County. Up to this point, the Commission on Substance Abuse had operated more on the policy-making level with its members coming from federal, state and local agencies, organizations and associations. Acting as an umbrella organization, the Commission mentors and provides technical assistance to these emerging coalitions as they take on the issue at the grass roots level, where real change can occur.
